Coffee is the Most Popular Drink in Canada According to Study

The following is a synopsis of a study commissioned by the Coffee Association of Canada(CAC).The results are based on telephone interviews conducted with 2,500 Canadians 18 and over, broken down evenly among the five regions of the country.

Thirty-seven per cent of Canadians had an awareness of organic coffee in 2003, up from 30 per cent in 2001. Awareness of fair trade coffee increased from four per cent to 11 per cent during the same period. Twenty percent of consumers like their coffee black, seven percent with sugar only, 33 per cent with cream or milk only, and 40 per cent with dairy and a sweetener.

Eighty-one per cent of Canadians drink coffee occasionally, and over 63 per cent drink coffee on a daily basis. This makes coffee the most popular drink among adult Canadians. Coffee is also a more popular beverage in Canada than it is in the United States, where coffee is drunk on a daily basis by only 49 per cent of the adult population. For several decades now, coffee has been the favorite beverage of Canadians, being more popular than tea, milk, beer, fruit juice and soft drinks.

Fifty-one per cent of Canadians drink coffee at breakfast, 16 per cent during the rest of the morning, nine per cent at lunch, 10 per cent in the afternoon, eight per cent at dinner time, and seven per cent in the evening. Medium roast coffee dominates the breakfast market, accounting for 56 per cent of coffee consumed at that time of day.

Most coffee (66 per cent) of coffee is consumed at home, while 12 per cent is consumed at work. Sixteen per cent of coffee is consumed at eating places, while five per cent is consumed at other places, such as hospitals, schools and arenas.

Approximately nine per cent of coffee drinkers drink decaffeinated coffee, while 17 per cent drink instant coffee. Fifty per cent of
adult Canadians drank specialty coffees over the past year, but only six per cent of Canadians drink this type of coffee on a daily basis.

I will be writing more about the CAC in the future.
