Kicking Horse Coffee Makes the Grade

Today while out doing some shopping I picked up a packet of Kicking Horse coffee. At $13.99 per pound, it is a little more expensive than what I am used to buying, but given that I managed to persuade my boss to to cover the cost, I am not complaining.

What struck me almost immediately was its distinctive packaging. Prominently written on the black background of the package were two logos: one asserting that it was "certified organic," the other saying "fair trade."

Following the instructions on the back of the package, I filled my dilapidated old Braun rotary grinder with the beans, which I then poured into the basket of my coffee maker with a little less than six cups of water (I like my coffee on the strong side).

A few minutes later, I had my coffee. After adding some sugar to the mix as well as some evaporated milk, I tasted the results. At first I found the coffee to be somewhat bitter, but I remedied this by adding a little more sugar. The results were more than satisfactory. Kicking Horse Coffee has a robust taste, bold and assertive. True to its marketing message this is truly a "kick ass" coffee experience.

Sometime early in the new year, I plan to compare Kicking Horse to some of the various coffees we at Destination Cafe sell. It should be interesting to see if there are any noticeable differences between the various coffees we sell and the one that Kicking Horse offers.

It will also be interesting to see if the increased amount of antioxidants found in organic coffee will lead to any health pay-offs beyond those that are merely psychological in nature.

I will be sure to let readers know if this is the case.

Dear Optimist:

I have written about some of the benefits of drinking coffee in general (i.e. coffee is known to reduce Type II diabetes and protect against Parkinsons and colon cancer).

Given the higher level of antioxidents in organic coffee, the benefits would doubtless increase. In any event, if you take a look at the older blogs, you can read my comments there.
