Cost of Coffee a Relative Thing

Is coffee too expensive? I've had this running argument with my boss Mary on the subject for some time now and I must admit that I have had a change of heart. If one goes to a place like Starbucks or Second Cup (something I seldom do) you usually have to be prepared to pay more. But there are many people who will tell you that the price is worth it -- if not for the coffee itself, then for the ambiance or social aspect of the establishment.

Top quality coffee can retail for as much as $100.00 a pound. Products like the Hacienda la Esmeralda Geisha from Panama set records not long ago when it sold at auction for $50.25 per pound.

Some might balk at paying that much for what to them is merely a cup of coffee. But true aficionados will assert that drinking good coffee is comparable to drinking a glass of fine wine. And even if you pay $10.00 a pound for coffee, according to Forbes.com, a cup of coffee will cost you less than a coke from a 12 pack. If you go so far as to spend twice as much for your coffee, an entire cup of coffee "will still cost less than a glass of wine from a $10.00 bottle."

Of course if your budget is anything like mine, this might still be a lot to pay. I suppose that in the end, these things truly are relative in nature.
